Isn’t this Cozy Pallet Reading Nook much more charming and inviting than a faux fireplace? We decided to ditch the cold, uninviting faux fireplace and updated to create this inviting area in our home. We used discarded pallets and old fence boards for this project.
Pallet Reading Nook – the beginning:
First, I pressure washed everything and let all the boards dry in the garage with a dehumidifier running for a couple of days. Next, I trimmed off the unusable end pieces. Then I ripped all the boards down to a consistent width.
The middle:
Unfortunately, my project involved some wall demolition. I removed the faux fireplace and surround. This left a hole in the wall that I filled with a piece of scrap plywood. Next, I had to patch the drywall so the wood wouldn’t look recessed and weird. I did the drywall while the wood was drying in the garage since the drywall mud had to dry too. FYI: if you’re going to dismantle a wall, be very cautious that you don’t hit wiring, plumbing, ducting, etc. Proceed with extreme caution!
The end:
I dry-fitted a staggered pattern of wider fence boards and thinner pallet boards on the ground before I began mounting them on the wall. Next, I stained them in three different shades after I was satisfied with the dry-fit process. Finally, I used a simple brad nailer to attach the boards to the walls. This was an easy project, and it transformed this corner from a dead space to somewhere we want to sit at every opportunity.
Editor’s note: Pressure washing is indeed an option for cleaning wood, but use a gentle nozzle to prevent expanding the fibers and damaging it more than you intended. See our tutorial on Protecting and Restoring wood for some tips and pointers.
