Pallet Yard Wagon For Mom

I made this Pallet Yard Wagon after an unfortunate palm tree accident that destroyed my mother's prized wagon! The tires were flat, and the rims of the wheels were folded over like penne pasta or a taco shell. The axles were bent out of shape, so badly the tires wouldn't rotate below the bed of the wagon, and the metal deck was tweaked. The metal handle was snapped in half and broken off entirely. In other words, the entire vehicle was pretty much pancaked.

Pallet Yard Wagon - When you break it, you replace it, right? But why not upcycle in the process and make a great garden wagon!

My mother's poor destroyed wagon sat like a broken-down old truck in a junkyard on the side of my shop for some months. I didn't know really what to do with it or where to replace it. Finally, I thought to myself, "Ya know what, I can build her a stronger, more stable and definitely better-looking wagon than that old yellow rusting metal one ever was," and took the personal challenge.

The history and why I had to replace it!

I locked down my shop to her for short periods of time each day for the next week and a half or so and built her the new and improved yard wagon; the "Mudder Martha" out of pallets. My mother's name is Martha, and before my father passed away, he had called her "Mother Martha" after Mother Teresa. He always said that she was as pure and saintly as any, hence the name of the wagon. My father was a 6th generation Florida boy, and my mother was from Ohio. He 000ribbed her about being a Yankee from time to time, so the back of the wagon carries the subtitle of "Yard Yankee."

The build:

The wagon is 4' long x just over 2' wide with 10 - 12" sides. I used a skill saw, palm sander, cordless drill, 1.5" - 2.5" wood and construction screws, stain and polyurethane and Rust-Oleum silver hammered texture paint for the wheels. The build time was about a week and a half. I straightened the steering hardware and reused the axles. I had to buy new wheels, and a dowel to make a new handle. The expression on my mother's face when I wheeled it out and asked her if she'd like to use it to take the trash to the road instead of her old wheelbarrow was priceless. She absolutely loves it.
