Do not spend 250.00 or more to buy gorgeous lights. Make your own Awesome Pallet Cube Lights for a little-to-no cost! I made this light for my deck using 2×4 and 1×6 pallet wood, some leftover plywood, and some scrap Lexan.

Pallet Cube Lights – My version:

I made this light to the following dimensions:  22″ tall and spaced 9″ apart between each corner piece. To begin, I ripped pallet deck boards to 3/4″ for the corners. I butt-joined them and attached them together with brad nails. Next, I cut the bottom out of 3/4″ plywood. I cut the top out of 1/8″ wood veneer plywood. Next, I used a simple lamp kit and followed the template directions to cut the bottom plywood.

I put three coats of gunstock stain and three coats of polyurethane on the wood pieces. Finally, I mounted the vertical supports to the base plywood and secured with fasteners.

Pallet Cube Lights – Lighting it up!

Next, I found some leftover Lexan and cut the panel to the correct size. I didn’t want it to be clear. To this end, I used 80-grit sandpaper to make the sides more opaque. I slid them in carefully, installed the lamp kit in and then mounted the top in. Finally, I turned it on and tested it out!

By the way, I saw on a large home center’s page (a large, blue box store) that cube deck lights can cost up to $250.00, and I knew I could do something that wouldn’t destroy my bank account. Some fun variations could be to do some of those glass etching stencils, or painting on the outside to give it that faux-stained glass look. The verticals could be painted with that foiling paint to give that faux-copper look too!

We’re pleased with how our Pallet Cube Lights came out, and hope you all enjoy it too – and have fun making your own!

What is the thickness and finish of your lexan material? Is the finish a gloss?
