My first attempt at using pallets and I must say did find it quite easy to make this easy pallet fence patio surround. I used 3x2 for the posts. I painted it with a good-quality, outdoor paint after we got the fence installed.
An easy project that adds beauty to your spaces:
First, obtain enough pallets for your project. That may take a while! When you have enough, don't split them fully apart, unless they're spaced badly. I cut the bottom deck off and left the top deck assembled. Next, install your posts. We used 2" x 3" posts, but use whatever size will give your fence good support. You also have to decide how to mount the posts and plan for protection from pests, isolating from water, etc. Your local area may have codes too. Once your posts are in place and ready to go, you can quickly finish the fence. At each post, one pallet section will cover half of the post and the next section will butt up against the other. Secure with outdoor-appropriate fasteners.
You can leave the boards as rustic as you like, or sand them down if they're rough. Our pallets were in decent shape, so we only had to paint them with a good-quality outdoor paint that'll protect the wood for years to come. install a gate of your choice and be sure you put in a sturdy post to support it properly. I made our gate out of more pallet wood to stay with the theme. Use any style of hardware that works for you, but we used the long gate hinges to provide enough support to prevent the gate from sagging. Then it's time to have family and friends over to enjoy the new space with you.
