Attractive Pallet Shelving Unit Plus Bottom Drawer

I was lucky to find these 1.35 m high pallet which became the height of this Pallet Shelving Unit Plus Bottom Drawer. I have enclosed a sequence of photos that I think will you help to figure out how I did it.

Start With The Frame

First I made the three rectangle structures with 1x1" thick wood and braced them across the centers for stability. I installed the three rectangles at the bottom, just above the drawer, and at the top of the cabinet. Next, I cut the deck boards to the height of 1.35 m (approximately 53"), and enclosed three sides, overlapping the front enough to hide the framework.

The Shelves

I made these shelves from grape-crates to keep the piece lighter. However, the boards don't have to be cut thinner; just use stronger shelf support brackets. Alternately, you can use plywood as well. Glue the shelf boards together and clamp. You may want to reinforce the joints between the shelf boards with dowel or biscuit joints.  Install scrap pieces of 1x1" boards to the insides of your cabinet wherever you want the shelves to be placed.

The Drawers

I used three deck boards and glued them together for the front face of the drawer. I glued two boards together for the backs and sides of the drawer. Next, I glued grape box slats together to form a bottom piece. I cut a small channel, approximately 1/4" by 1/4" to hold the bottom grape-slat wood panel that I glued up.

Then, I trimmed the panel so that it was roughly 1/4" longer when inserted (as it'll fit into a 1/4" groove in the final piece of the drawer frame when complete). You don't need to glue in the drawer bottom - it's okay to let it float in that channel you cut. To finish the drawer, I used two pieces of rope to create fun drawer pulls.

Decorative Trim and Finishing

The decorative trim was just one more deck board that I sketched out a little pattern and trimmed out. I made curtains from a pretty bit of scrap material and a cheap curtain rod. This is so we can cover the shelves since this is going to be used for a shoe storage cabinet.  I sanded down the cabinet and applied a wood oil to protect the piece.
