Whether you study in school or at home, you know that a table desk is essential in boosting your productivity. However, it doesn’t have to be an expensive piece to serve the purpose. In fact, a chair is the most important piece of furniture you should invest in since an uncomfortable chair can be damaging to your health.
A good study table should be flat, functional, stable and comfortable. It should also fit your study space perfectly. This sounds like something you can build on your own, right? Yes, you can simply DIY and save a good amount of money you would have used to purchase one.
What Should You Do Before Building a Table?
If you want to build a table, there are a few things you need to do before you begin the construction process. These include:
- Select the type of table you need: There are so many types of study tables out there, all with different designs. Take some time to browse through the internet or woodworking magazines and choose the one that is best suited for you. You should also consider the size of the table and the available study space.
- Sketch the design of the table: Create a sketch of your ideal table using a pencil and a ruler to see how it will look like. At this point, the dimensions are not very important.
Yougoal is to see if you can get the steps right. Sketching helps you to figure out how you want the finished structure to be, the features you will want on it and the appropriate size.
- Have a rough estimate of the wood pallets you need: Study the basic components of the table you are going to make to estimate the
amountof wood pallets you will need. Extra features mean additional wood. It is a good idea to buy some extra wood material just in case you will need to modify the table later.
- Consider the type of wood you will use: Since you are trying to make something simple but elegant, you do not have to choose the most expensive wood. A good idea is to choose sturdy wood if you would want your table to serve you for a long time before you can build another one. For example, pine, maple, and cherry wood pallets are a perfect choice.
- Buy all the material and ready them for the process: After understanding all the requirements, purchase the materials and make them ready. For example, you can cut the wood into the required dimensions to make your work easier.
Materials and Tools Needed
Making a table is just like constructing an essay. First, you have to plan before writing or else you will end up messing everything. This is something that students do and they are forced to find someone to rewrite my article as a result of inadequate planning. Similarly, when it comes to desk-making, you need to know and assemble all the materials you require lest you mess up in the middle of the process. Here are the materials you need:
- Wood pallet boards
- Wood glue
For the tools, you need simple stuff like:
- A measuring table
- A level
- A marker or a pencil
- A miter saw a table saw or a handheld circular saw
- A cordless drill
Create the tabletop
The fastest and easiest way you can cut the board or wood is by using a miter saw. But if you don’t have one, a circular saw will be a good option. Work on a flat surface to help make the tabletop as even as possible. You should then place the boards on to the tabletop of the sketch you made earlier.
In case you are making a large table desk, place the boards on the floor on a tarp to protect the wood from getting scratched. Also, a good and easy option is to use tongue and groove planking to join the boards to the table. However, you can utilize a dowel to come up with a handle joint if you find this more convenient for you. This is a good option for beginners as they do not have to mess everything up in their first steps as first-time writers do. It is easier for writers though because they can request someone to rewrite my paper. For builders, they have to start all over again. You can also make a tabletop with just one sheet of wood. This, however, might be difficult for beginners because wood is quite heavy. It can also be expensive. If you want something within your budget, a good idea is to use plywood.
Flattening the boards
Make the boards as flat as possible and the edges rounded. If you desire a good-looking and study desk, you have to cut off some edge so that it acquires a square shape. This is where you will need a table saw or a circular saw. You can google how to cut a straight edge using a circular saw as this is usually difficult. Note that you are just cutting off a thin part of the rounded edge to make it square. Avoid cutting it so thick, or else you will ruin it. In addition, you should just cut one side of the two boards and leave the others rounded.
Make pocket holes
The pocket holes should come from the outer board to the inner one. You should drill these holes before adding the screws to prevent the board from cracking. A pocket-hole jig makes drilling easy and it makes nice holes. You will not have to worry about drilling through the board or wood. Also, it will be easier for you to secure the wooded pieces if you clamp them first before drilling.
Stick the tabletops together using wood glue
You need to have four clamps so that you place two at the bottom and two at the top. Also, you don’t have to turn the boards sideways in order to apply glue as you can place two clamps underneath them. Spread the glue evenly on the whole edge then lay the boards over sticking the glue-sided and the non-glue sides together. Note that you do not need to apply glue on both sides of the board/wood as it will not stick properly. Make sure the boards are clamped together evenly and tightly. If the glue starts leaking, you should wipe it off immediately to avoid the need to sand it off later. You can choose just to use wood glue alone rather than adding screws because it is strong enough to hold the board pieces together.
Attaching the Legs
Before attaching the legs, you will need to:
Trim them to the desired height
This is quite a difficult step because if you make any mistake with the legs, you will not get a stable table. To trim the legs, line them close to each other, measure their heights while marking them and then reduce the size accordingly using a saw. It is important to check because even if the wood was cut at a store, there is a chance it will not be even. If you are making the legs on your own, the simplest way is to make them even is by cutting the legs roughly, clump them together and cut to an even size.
Stick the legs to the apron joints using wood glue
Position the legs where the aprons meet one another. Spread the glue evenly below the table and inner apron parts. After that, place a leg in each apron then clamp them in place. Though it is not important, you can wait until the glue dries up. Clamp the legs tightly so they don’t loosen when you are screwing them.
Make some pilot holes into the legs and the aprons
Position the screws at the center where the legs and the apron meet. Drill into the leg with a 1/4 inch drill and the apron on the other side of the leg. Drill a total of eight holes.
Use fastening screws to fasten the legs to the aprons
You can use 0.64 cm screws on each leg. Fix the screws through the apron straight into the leg. Twist the screws into the legs using a ratchet. Do not drill the screws into the desired place as they may end up breaking considering how tough they are. Also, ensure the legs are well leveled and are placed at the right angle before you screw them into place.
Turn over the table to check its stability
Wait until the glue is dry before you can turn over the table. If you are sure it is dry, place it on level ground and check if it is wobbling. If the table is unstable, recheck the positioning of the legs and ensure they are flat against the underside of the table and the apron.
Staining and Sanding the table
Use sandpaper, preferably 80-grit to sand your table. To make your work easier, use a belt sander as it will not leave any marks. However, sanding is not compulsory. If the finishing is fine just apply a sealant to protect the wood from moisture. Smoothen the table all over again using 220-grit sandpaper and wash off the table to get rid of the debris. Apply wood staining using a brush or a rag, then a second coating when the stain starts to dry. Wipe the excess wood stain before it dries up.
Drawers on your study table
Drawers on a study desk are very useful in storing study materials like books, pens, files, and any other material you will need during study time. If you want the drawers on your desk, here are simple steps to follow to make a drawer:
- Cut the drawer parts using a miter saw in your desirable dimensions
- Make drawer face holes
- Drill drawer face holes
- Put cleats on the back and front pieces of the drawer parts
- Attach the cleats to the drawer side pieces
- Fit the sides
- Assemble the sides
- Fix the plywood base
- Attach the drawer face
All these steps are pretty much the same when constructing any type of table except for the drawers. The kind of planning required when making a study table is the same thing you will need when planning for your essay. However, the good thing with writing a paper is that you can use an essay rewriter, to rewrite sentences without changing the meaning if you find that you have made an error in the planning stage.
