At I Love Nature we wanted to create a few classrooms around the site. We had an area of land that consisted of old mine waste. Rather than dig it out with a machine we decided to build on top of it. We did so by using 70 coach tires stacked and bolted onto each other and filled with rubble. Onto the tires, we bolted together pallets as a base floor. We then built a ramp out of pallets and clad the sides with log hand rails and raspberry cane dressing. We stripped over 100 pallets for their planks and clad the entire deck and ramp with them. We started in December 2014 and finished in July 2015 (working odd weekends when we could). Hard work, but worth it. Project cost us under £200, which covered the nuts and bolts, wood supports, screws and trips to collect pallets and tires. The hardest part was leveling the base with the tires. We used planks of pallet wood to level as we bolted the lot together. The lengthy process was removing individual planks from the pallets and then laying them out on the deck, screwing them down was quite a few days of work. We used screws instead of nails so they could easily be removed and replaced over time.
