I’ve built this pallet rabbit hutch out of approximately 3/4 pallets. I’ve made it as sturdy as possible, to resist against strong winds we frequently face here. I’ve covered the 3 sides with felt for a better protection. Let see the step-by-step instructions to build this pallet rabbit hutch.

  1. First, start by deciding the size you want for your hutch or house, then fasten the rear horizontal pieces to the rear vertical legs using countersunk screws.
  2. Place the assembled rear section on its side so you can fit the side pieces.
  3. Then, place the side pieces as required to the edge of the rear horizontal pieces and screw each in place, making sure they are at level.
  4. Repeating the same method for the opposite side, you will need to support each side piece by using some kind of support at the loose ends, to keep everything square.
  5. Fasten the front legs to the loose end pieces at the sides to make a three-sided structure, when stood in an upright position. The length of the legs is determined by how many horizontal pieces you use for the size of the hutch you require.
  6. At the front fasten two horizontal pieces (one top and one bottom) to the edges of each side section, this will allow you to then fit the required number of pieces to the top and bottom of the hutch, for the roof and base. These pieces are placed from the front to the rear, by screwing them to the front cross pieces and then to the rear top and bottom horizontal pieces.
  7. You can then make the divider between the sleeping and living area. Measure the height between the roof and floor inside the hutch, then cut the wood to size (by placing the pieces horizontally and fastened together by two vertical pieces), then screw the divider from the front towards the rear of the hutch. You can do this by drilling the holes at an angle top and bottom, (4 holes, 2 at the top and 2 at the bottom) leave enough gap at the rear for the animal to pass from one section to the next.
  8. The doors are then made by cutting the pieces to size for each one. The solid door is held together by using 2 pieces placed horizontally against the vertical pieces to hold them in place, (all pieces are screwed together).
  9. Make the second door frame, then cut 4 smaller pieces of wood placing them at each corner of the frame to hold it together, (for the wire netting to be fastened on using u-shaped staples). You will need to cut a vertical divider between each door, also fit door stoppers inside the hutch, cut to size. the solid door requiring a vertical piece fitted at the opposite end from the hinges.
  10. Fit the felt to the hutch using felt nails. I fit the felt to the rear of the hutch, then over the top and sides.
  11. All pieces are held together by countersunk screws, (no gluing required) this is for ease of assembly (also in case any of the wood should rot).
