I made this Dual-Stained Pallet Headboard by layering and partially sanding layers of stain to create a unique and beautiful look.

Make your own Stained Pallet Headboard:

First, I made the frame with 2″ x 4″ lumber to get the length and straightness I needed. Then, I made the center supports out of 2″ x 2″ lumber I had handy. I chose pallet boards that were all the same thickness and cut them to width on my table saw. Then I mounted the pallet boards using some wood glue and 1 1/2″ nails with my nail gun. A nail gun is a good investment as it significantly reduces the splitting that often happens with regular nails & hardwood. For the finish, I applied a light coat of black stain then sanded it all down. The black stain remained in all of the dings and dents and really brought the piece more character after I applied the Minwax stain over the top.

The headboard is built, but still raw before sanding.

Use stain to highlight, or in this case, low-light features – I let the stain sit briefly before sanding it off roughly, leaving the low points and crevices of the wood still stained. I love the effect!

Gorgeous – the black stain beneath the rich brown stain adds a dimension and depth of character we really love!
