I want you to be able to acquire nice usable wood that you can start using right away for free. So save you money for other things on your projects.
Typical wood that you’ll find include:
- 1 x 2″ boards (Oak, Pine, Cherry, Maple)
- 2 x 4″ (Pine, Oak)
- Plywood, MDF, and chipboard of varying thicknesses
- 4 x 4″ (Pine, Oak, Maple)
- 2 x 6″ (Pine, Poplar)
- and many other usable soft and hardwood materials for your projects.
You’ve asked, and now you’ll know how to Find Free Wood – the clever locations that you didn’t think of!
Although this may be hard to see, this is a trailer load of pallets and crate sides/tops. The front half of this trailer is FULL of crate sides! This is your admin. Assistant’s SUV/trailer. I got many 4×4″ maple stringers, plywood, and even oddball redwood pallets. <3
In my YouTube videos, you will see many examples of things that I have made with these free materials. One of my favorite things about this is that you don’t have to worry about getting rid of the parts that you can use because you can use it all. Sometimes I worry about bringing home pallets because I am not sure if they have chemicals or even bugs (pests) that come with them. Editor’s note: See our page on Pallet Safety for helpful tips!
You can get a LARGE VARIETY of wood (yes, your admin assistant uses this method too). You’ll find many sizes, types, and materials including plywood, MDF, chipboard, and even metal straps that can be upcycled into your projects. Waste not, want not!

So, are you ready for the secret? Here it is: Go to places that receive large amounts of freight. For example – places that sell lawn tractors, farm equipment, auto body shops, furniture stores, motorcycle dealerships and many others. Get more tips on where to get free pallets!
Editor’s note: Keep in mind that many large freight companies DO recycle their pallets for money, but the crate sides/lids are not easily processed, so they throw them out! Always ask before just picking up a pile of pallets.
Great idea! Now, while you’re out there, why not pick up those old tires that people rudely toss away? Turn them into great Rope-Covered Ottomans and Yard Seats! Check out Chris Gagnon’s other great tutorials while you’re at it!
