We made this Magnificent Two-tier Pallet Kitchen Island using eight pallets in only 40 hours! Wouldn’t this gorgeous creation make a stunning focal point to your kitchen?
Two-tier Pallet Kitchen Island – Framing:
First, the frame was built using pocket joinery (such as Kreg Pocket Jig tool). We butt-joined the frame, but the pocket joinery makes the joint stronger. The floor of the cabinet is plywood over the support frame. Next, I covered the side panels with more pallet boards installed at an angle. This creates a bit more waste but is worth it for the visual appeal. I framed out the back of the cabinet’s inside surface with more pallet wood that we installed vertically. We cut the back panel taller to create the bar counter area.
Two-tier Pallet Kitchen Island – The Bar Counter (2nd Tier) & doors:
First, I framed out a large panel section, again using pocket joinery. I installed the pallet boards diagonally again. Then, I added decorative trim pieces to frame out the panels. Then I repeated the process on the doors.
Two-tier Pallet Kitchen Island – Finishing:
First, I stained everything, wiping the excess off carefully to highlight the grain. I sealed it all with several coats of high-gloss polyurethane varnish, sanding gently between coats to obtain a gorgeous high-gloss finish. We purchased the countertops separately. However, they were worth the bit of added expense to get the look we wanted. I pre-stained the wood filler to try to hide the pocket holes, and it worked fairly well. Finally, I attached the counters, doors, and hardware. This was a bigger project than I first thought it would be, but we’re happy with the outcome.
Is there a template or instructions on how to make this?
Not really, I did draw out what I wanted to do first. But I didn’t write down any steps after I worked them out in my head. If I can figure out how to post the drawing I will.
