Purrrrfect Pallet Cat Tree – Dimensions

  • 57″ tall
  • 30 x 19″ base board
  • 22 x 13″ bottom board
  • 19 x 13″ middle board
  • 9 x 13″ top board

Building the frame

Cut a pallet stringer to the length you want for the height of your tree. We cut this one to 57” tall. Be aware that if you cut it too tall, you’ll have to make a wider base board to keep it stable.  Next, decide where your middle board height will be. Mark your tallest stringer board and measure it. Cut the 2nd leg of the “tripod” you’ll be making to this length.

Now decide where you want your lower board to be positioned. Mark the tallest stringer board again and measure. Cut the third leg of the “tripod” to this length.

I cut two cross-supports that will go under the perch boards: one under the lower board and one under the middle board. Cut them to the same width.

Cutting the middle board

I cut a hole the size of my tallest stringer board so that this middle board would slide over the vertical support and be strong. Decide where you want the vertical support to go through, measure the end dimensions of your stringer board and mark that onto your middle board. Pre-drill a hole big enough to get your jigsaw blade through and then cut out the hole.

Assembly of the lower and middle perches

First, I used glue on all joints. Next, I installed the cross braces between the two taller vertical supports. I mounted them to the height I wanted the first two perch boards. Next, I put that assembled section flat but supported it evenly with scrap wood to the height I wanted to mount it to the pedestal baseboard. Then I held the pedestal baseboard up, pre-drilled and then secured with fasteners from the underside. I mounted the third leg of the tripod at this point too.

The lower perch board was notched to fit around the tallest vertical support. I installed it to the lowest horizontal brace and to the shortest leg of the tripod support with screws. I cut an additional support board and mounted it to the outside of the tallest piece and secured it in place on the upper and lower perches. The middle perch board was slid over the horizontal support and secured in place to the upper cross bracing and middle leg.

The upper perch board & finishing

To make it easy for the cats to hop up, I trimmed the corner off first. Next, I mounted it to the top end of the vertical support with more screws. I rough-sanded just to prevent splinters. Finally, I cut pieces of scrap carpeting about three inches wider in all directions for the three perches, folded it over and secured it in place on the undersides with a staple gun.

I’ll keep you all updated if our kitties approve or not (but I suspect they will).
