Having made several ‘kitchens‘ for ‘little people, I got asked if I could make a larger version. I wanted to make one that a larger group of friends could play around. I came up with this 3-Bowl Pallet Mud Kitchen with Removeable Blackboard that you could get up to six kids around. Kids love to be competitive, talk and play together and they get the chance here either making mud pies or texture pies made with mud, dried pasta, gravel, beads, dried flowers, etc…
How I made this 3-Bowl Pallet Mud Kitchen with Removeable Blackboard:
To start, I made sure that the frame was going to be sound and sturdy, so I made the uprights from 100mm x 50mm (2×4″) planed timber, with a total height of 1000mm (about 40″). The back-to-front depth is approx. 550mm (approx 22″) and the front and side boards are made from 20mm (approx 3/4″) thick wood. All the timber is from pallets except the worktop. I needed something really decent so I bought some 144mm (approx. 5 1/2″) wide Red Cedar. I’ve posted stage pictures to show steps through the build which is self-explanatory.
To secure the project, I screwed and glued all the joined areas and sanded all the corners and surfaces smooth. I used 100mm x 50mm (2×4″) cross members to support the worktop and the lower shelf. This makes for a truly solid construction. I made the width 1200mm (47 1/4″), which enabled me to get in three 280mm (11″) stainless steel bowls for mixing. The height of the worktop is a comfortable 520mm (approx 20 1/2″), which is an ideal working height for kiddies.
3-Bowl Pallet Mud Kitchen with Removeable Blackboard – fun additions:
I thought it would be nice to have a black chalkboard so the teacher or parent could write the children’s names or recipes for pies. I made it from thick plywood that I framed with mitered corners for a bit of class. The board is removable, which makes it easier to write on instead of bending down. I put a mitered runner guide at the bottom and a top guide and board stop made of a piece of log. I added utensil hooks and finished it with kid-safe wood oil.
Very happy kiddies!
