From a planter box to a Celtic-Inspired Pallet Blanket Chest – here’s how it happened: I got some pallets to make something. I was thinking of making some planter boxes…maybe to sell. The pallets I got aren’t the typical ones you found and took a long time to get apart. As I started getting planks together, and getting the nails out…..I noticed a lot of the boards were bowed and that I didn’t have the skills or equipment to get them straight. So, I tried to use the straightest ones I had and match up the curves of uneven ones together to minimize gaps between planks.

As I started getting planks together, and getting the nails out…..I noticed a lot of the boards were bowed and that I didn’t have the skills or equipment to get them straight. So, I tried to use the straightest ones I had and match up the curves of uneven ones together to minimize gaps between planks.

From Planter Box to Celtic-Inspired Pallet Blanket Chest:

I started by cutting the pieces for the sides and front of the box. I actually only used a tape measure twice in the whole project. And that was to just measure the planks from the sides and front. The rest I did throughout the project I did by holding pieces against what I had already made and marking with a pencil where to cut.

To create the design, I first did it on the computer and scaled it to size. Then I printed it on pieces of A4 paper that I stuck together with tape. I then drew my design on the wood using carbon paper.

All the carving was done with chisels, but I did end up getting a plunge router for the lid. That enabled me to lower the background level of the wood. I still had to do a lot of hand-carving to finish it out, though.

After I had carved the front panel, I decided then that I wouldn’t make a planter box as over time it would rot, and what I have done would have been wasted. It was then I decided to start thinking of how to design a blanket chest.

I made the design up as I went along, often stopping to look and think about the next step.

I used a small band saw for some of the feet, but they were too big to fit in the band saw so I would have to finish off cutting out with a hand coping saw.

I finished off the pallets with a teak stain and varnish. I used a piano hinge for the lid.

A massive project that took quite some time, but I’m very proud of my Celtic-Inspired Pallet Blanket Chest.
