- We first gathered the equivalent of 10-12 pallets (about 70-80 neat and clean slats), selected and drilled some holes so we could pass three threaded rods (8mm) among the whole structure, so as to press it and make sure it would keep stable. Final size is about 150×55 cm, so there’s a shorter piece at the end of each slat, and the width is that of 35 slats. We arranged colours and textures in a beautiful fashion and glued and pressed each slat: it took a little while, but the result was worth it!
- We leveled the tabletop with both manual and power planes, rounded the edges and the short ends, then sanded it until it was smooth: you don’t want your hands hurt while cooking or having a drink! We finally oiled it with fresh extra virgin olive oil, the same you use for cooking: in our opinion it’s the best to protect the wood from water and moist, it’s natural, gives a beautiful natural finish and the lovely smell lasts a few weeks!
- The rest of the structure is a “basic” frame with salvaged wood (we bought nothing) and more pallet slats for the shelves and cover. We added some diagonal pieces to make sure the frame would be rigid enough and even though we initially planned to put four big industrial cart wheels; we finally decided it was high enough and more stable without them. Voilà! How do you like it?
