Pallet Lamp

It was inspired by the various lamp and lampshade styles I saw on Pinterest, but as I’ve never made light before, I decided to keep it simple. I like how you can make circles with a bunch of straight lines, and how there’s geometry in nature, so I thought I’d play with that idea. Using various strips of scrap wood (oak, poplar, pine, and redwood), I made three different sizes of squares with mitered corners. I attached the corners with small brass screws because I thought the color looked nice against the wood, but also attached the corners with glue to reinforce them. The base where the lamp is attached is just a scrap slice of oak, and I used an Ikea lamp kit that had a pre-printed template to trace onto the wood and then used a hole saw to cut out. I sanded them all smooth starting with 120 grit and then down to 320 grit.

I started out with the smallest size of the square and attached it to the base plate of wood. Then I began staggering the squares, turning them so that if you’re looking down on one square and then turned the next square, it would look like a diamond shape on top of the 1st one. It’ll make sense in the picture. I did three total sizes: one small square, three of the middle-sized square, and three of the largest size square.

I attached each square with wood glue and nails. When it dried, I applied four coats of water-based polyurethane (gloss), sanding between coats. When everything was finally dry, I installed the Ikea lamp kit and had the husband install it in my little hallway.

Hope this inspires you all to save and use those scraps from your bigger pallet projects!
